Michael Pung

Hi 🙂 I am Mike. A veteran of the Republic of Singapore Air Force, my military experience piqued my interest in renewable energy in the quest for sustainable fuels. I received my BS in Biochemistry and Applied Mathematics from UCLA in 2024 and conducted undergraduate research in inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, and pure math, solidifying my desire to be an interdisciplinary researcher where I strive to be an organic-curious math-inclined inorganic chemist. As a graduate student in Prof. Chong Liu’s lab on the inorganic track, I am interested in combining electrochemistry, molecular synthesis, and characterization techniques to develop catalytic systems, discern reaction mechanisms, and design energy storage motifs to address 21st century challenges in catalysis, energy, and environment, with potential future interests in automation, chemical processing, and biotechnology. I aspire to pursue a professorial position acting as a multi-disciplinary researcher, teacher, and mentor, ensuring the next generation of scientists are insightful, diverse, and sustainable. In my free time, I enjoy pondering over abstract nonsense, trying various aqueous/organic solvent mixtures, exploring new places, and playing board games.Â
